In family therapy, the entire family is considered the client. All family members over the age of 12 must sign a release of information form for the therapist to share any family therapy details with third parties. To maintain a healthy therapeutic relationship, therapists often implement a “no secrets” policy when working with couples or families. This means that if a private conversation occurs between the therapist and one family member, and the content of that conversation is essential for the progress of therapy, the therapist will not keep it confidential from the others.
If a family member requests that the therapist keep a secret that impacts the therapy process, the therapist may terminate family or couples therapy, as it would violate the “no secrets” policy. Family members who wish to explore personal matters privately are encouraged to address those topics with their individual therapists rather than the family therapist.
